Understanding the Difference Between Open Access and Open Science

Open Access vs Open Science: What's the Difference?

Open Access and Open Science are often mentioned together in academic publishing, but they are not interchangeable terms. While both support greater accessibility and transparency in research, they address different aspects of scholarly communication.

Understanding the distinction can help researchers make better decisions about journal selection, data sharing, publication requirements, and research transparency.

What Is Open Access?

Open Access (OA) refers primarily to making published research freely accessible to readers. An Open Access article can be read online without a subscription or paywall.

Different Open Access models exist. Depending on the journal, publication costs may be covered through article processing charges (APCs), institutional or funder support, subscriptions, or other funding arrangements. Some journals also operate under diamond or platinum Open Access models, in which neither readers nor authors pay publication fees.

However, Open Access does not, by itself, determine how the research was conducted, reviewed, or shared.

For example, an Open Access journal may still use a traditional closed peer-review process in which reviewer identities and review reports remain confidential. Similarly, Open Access does not automatically mean that the underlying dataset, research code, or methodology is publicly available.

What Is Open Science?

Open Science is a broader approach to making research more transparent, accessible, reproducible, and reusable throughout the research lifecycle.

Depending on the discipline and journal, Open Science practices may include:

  • Open Access: Making research publications freely available.
  • Open data: Sharing research datasets where ethical, legal, and practical considerations permit.
  • Open methods and materials: Providing sufficient methodological detail and research materials to support understanding and reuse.
  • Open-source code: Making analytical or computational code available where appropriate.
  • Open peer review: Increasing transparency around reviewer identities, reports, or the review process.
  • Preregistration: Publicly registering research questions, hypotheses, or analysis plans before conducting a study.
  • Reproducible research practices: Providing the information, materials, protocols, or code needed to support verification and reproduction of research findings.

Open Access is therefore one important component of Open Science, but Open Science extends beyond access to the final article.

Open Access vs Open Science: What Is the Difference?

The easiest way to understand the distinction is to consider what each concept focuses on.

A paper can therefore be Open Access without fully following Open Science practices.

For example, an article may be freely available to everyone while its dataset remains unavailable, and its peer-review process remains confidential.

Conversely, a subscription-based journal may encourage or require practices such as data sharing, preregistration, or transparent reporting even though the published article itself is not immediately available to everyone without a subscription.

Why Does the Distinction Matter When Choosing a Journal?

The difference becomes particularly important when researchers are deciding where to submit a manuscript.

If your primary requirement is that readers should be able to access your article without a subscription, you need to examine the journal's Open Access model, licensing terms, and publication charges.

If your priority is broader research transparency, you need to look beyond the journal's Open Access status.

Before submitting, consider questions such as:

1. Does the journal require or encourage data sharing?

2. Does it have a policy on research materials or analytical code?

3. Does it support or require preregistration?

4. What type of peer review does it use?

5. Are reviewer reports or reviewer identities made available?

6. Does the journal's Open Access policy meet your funder's or institution's requirements?

7. Are there additional research-transparency requirements that apply to your study?

These questions can reveal requirements that are not apparent from an Open Access label alone.

What Should Researchers Check Before Submission?

Journal selection should therefore involve more than checking whether a journal is Open Access.

A practical pre-submission check can include four areas:

1. Access Check whether the journal provides Open Access, what licence it uses, and whether publication fees apply.

2. Data and materials Review the journal's policies on datasets, research materials, code, and supplementary information.

3. Peer review Determine whether the journal uses single-anonymized, double-anonymized, open, or another peer-review model.

4. Compliance Check whether the journal's policies satisfy the requirements of your funder, institution, study protocol, or research field.

Taking these steps before submission can prevent compliance problems later in the publication process.

Open Access Is Not the Same as Open Science

Open Access and Open Science are closely related, but they answer different questions.

Open Access asks: Can readers access the published research without a subscription or paywall?

Open Science asks: How openly and transparently are the research process, outputs, data, methods, and other research materials shared?

Keeping these questions separate can help researchers choose journals more carefully, understand publication requirements, and avoid assuming that an Open Access option automatically satisfies broader Open Science expectations.

For authors preparing a manuscript for submission, understanding these distinctions is a small but valuable part of publication readiness.
